01 AT A GLANCE

Manufacturing an elite property fast

World Sevens Football is a women's seven-a-side “grand slam” series that stages eight elite club teams per event on a half-size pitch. Announced in March 2025 and run by co-founder and CEO Justin Fishkin, it is backed by philanthropist Jennifer Mackesy — a minority owner of both Gotham FC and Chelsea — with DAZN as global broadcast, production and marketing partner. The pitch is blunt: pay clubs and players immediate, outsized cash to assemble a broadcast-ready women's property at speed.

The prize economics are the proposition. A $5m-per-event pool, with roughly $2m to the winner, dwarfs most women's-club prize money and functions as a manufactured incentive to attract the top clubs. Within twelve months the series moved from a single event to a multi-city circuit, an aggressive scale-up that is itself the entity's defining characteristic.

03 OPERATING REALITY

How the series actually works

W7F is a capital-and-format bet on the women's game's monetisation gap. It pays clubs and players immediate cash far above the women's norm to manufacture an elite, broadcast-ready property at speed, then relies on DAZN to distribute it. The DAZN partnership mirrors the broadcaster's wider women's-football and direct-to-consumer strategy: W7F is effectively premium content inventory for DAZN's women's-sports push as much as it is a standalone competition.

Club participation is opportunistic rather than committed. There is no league structure, no promotion or relegation, and no calendar sanction — clubs appear for the money and the exposure, which means the franchise value accrues to W7F rather than to the teams. That is a feature for the organiser and a fragility for the model: the property depends on a single anchor financier and a single broadcast partner, and on continued willingness from clubs to lend their names to an off-calendar exhibition.

04 STRATEGIC POSTURE

Direction in 2026

The 2026 posture is rapid circuit expansion across host cities, using outsized prize money and DAZN distribution to lock in the top women's clubs before any rival format scales. The sustainability question sits underneath the growth: whether a $5m-per-event pool is a durable economic base or a subsidised customer-acquisition cost that compresses once novelty and DAZN's underwriting normalise — and whether a non-sanctioned 7v7 series builds the women's game or competes with the eleven-a-side product clubs actually monetise.

The governance horizon is FIFA and UEFA cooperation. Calendar congestion and sanctioning friction are the natural ceiling on a property that sits outside the official structure; securing institutional buy-in, or being deliberately kept outside it, will shape how large W7F can become.
