A format, not a league
The Soccer Tournament is an annual seven-a-side, single-elimination, winner-take-all competition staged over one week at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina. It is operated by TBT Enterprises, the company behind basketball's The Basketball Tournament, and ports the same made-for-broadcast model into football: open application, a single venue, a one-week calendar, and a signature “Target Score Time” finish that guarantees a game-winning goal rather than a shoot-out.
TST's intellectual property is the format and the distribution, not any club or roster. Low fixed cost and borrowed brand equity — club-affiliated and ex-pro sides supply the names — let it manufacture a high-stakes TV event without owning any club's running costs. For 2026 it added a third bracket and graduated from cable and streaming to the NBC broadcast network.
Format, prizes, and distribution
How the event actually works
TST is a distribution-and-format play with deliberately low fixed cost. One venue, one week, open application, and a cash hook do the work that a league would need a full season and franchise infrastructure to achieve. Club-affiliated entries — Wrexham, Villarreal, América — lend borrowed brand equity and a marketing flywheel without TST carrying any club expense, and the Wrexham/Ryan Reynolds halo in particular supplies outsized attention for a single roster.
The NBC network upgrade, from cable and streaming to broadcast, plus the addition of a third bracket, signals a property graduating from novelty to a repeatable summer TV event. The risk on the other side of that growth is dilution: three brackets spread the talent thinner, and the mixed-gender format is as likely to be read as a stunt as a durable competition until its viewership proves otherwise.
Direction in 2026
The 2026 strategy is scale through broadcast reach and bracket expansion, betting that the winner-take-all hook produces durable, repeatable viewership rather than a one-week curiosity. The structural question is whether a single-venue, single-week US event can build year-round brand value, or whether it remains a low-margin seasonal spike dependent on celebrity-club cameos for its audience.
