Sponsorship as soft power
Qatar Airways is the state-owned national carrier, a top-tier FIFA partner since 2017 whose partnership now runs through 2030 — covering the 2026 World Cup, the 2027 Women's World Cup, the 2030 World Cup and the Club World Cup. Football is the spearhead of a multi-sport soft-power strategy that also spans F1, MotoGP, rugby and US basketball.
Its club anchor is Paris Saint-Germain, where it is principal shirt sponsor through 2028 on a deal reported at €60–70m a season, supplemented by a training-kit deal at Inter Milan. In May 2025 it achieved a sponsorship treble — backing both Champions League finalists plus the competition itself — a deliberate strategy of guaranteed visibility regardless of result.

How the sponsorship actually functions
The PSG deal is functionally intra-group soft power: Qatar Sports Investments owns PSG and Qatar Airways is state-owned, so the sponsorship is a vehicle for national branding more than arm's-length commerce — a fair-market-value question relevant to UEFA's financial rules. The airline times spend to mega-events, making FIFA the centrepiece in the World Cup year with club deals as always-on reinforcement.
The treble and the Inter hedge show a deliberate strategy of guaranteed-visibility insurance — buying both finalists so the brand is on screen regardless of result. Football is the spearhead of a broader multi-sport push, but its value is as much geopolitical as commercial.
Direction in 2026
The posture is locked-in, World Cup-year saturation — FIFA partner through 2030, PSG through 2028, plus Inter and a wide multi-sport spread. The open questions are the true arm's-length value of the PSG deal given common state ownership, whether the airline extends beyond PSG and Inter into a new marquee club for the 2026–2030 cycle, and how its own state-backed finances constrain spend after the World Cup.
