01 AT A GLANCE

Attention as the asset

The Icon League is an entertainment-first football competition founded in 2024 by former Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos and German streamer Elias Nerlich. The format borrows directly from Spain's Kings League: short, rule-modified matches engineered for unpredictability, teams captained by creators and ex-professionals, and distribution built for social platforms rather than traditional broadcast. The product monetises attention, not gate receipts or rights fees.

Note on format: the league is consistently described as 5-a-side, not 6-a-side — a useful distinction from the German rival Baller League. In late 2025 the project raised a €15m Series A and installed an institutional CEO, signalling a shift from founder passion-project to venture-backed company that must now show durable revenue rather than viewership spikes.

03 OPERATING REALITY

How the league actually functions

The model is cheap to scale and fragile by design. Its core asset is borrowed creator audiences, which means low production and acquisition cost but acute exposure to a single personality: a large share of debut viewership traced to Nerlich's existing Twitch base. The strategic question is whether that audience is incremental to football or merely redistributed from one streamer's channel — and what churns when novelty fades.

The €15m raise and the appointment of an institutional CEO mark a deliberate move from spectacle to company. Management must now convert viewership spikes into a recurring sponsorship run-rate, the only revenue base that justifies a triple-digit-million valuation. In head-to-head windows the league has out-drawn German rival Baller League and Italy's GOA7 on concurrent viewers, suggesting the format competes well within the sportainment niche even if the absolute audience remains modest.

The Icon League is complementary to traditional football, not adversarial. It harvests ex-professionals and football-adjacent fandom rather than competing for the eleven-a-side product, positioning itself as a Gen-Z reach vehicle for sponsors who find conventional football inventory saturated.

04 STRATEGIC POSTURE

Direction in 2026

Newly capitalised and newly managed, the league's 2026 priority is international rollout and a more durable commercial base. The hard problem is travel: the format's pull in Germany rests on an anchor creator, and no obvious Nerlich-equivalent exists in each new market. Whether the model is genuinely exportable, or inherently country-by-country, is the bet the Series A is funding.
