Agnelli returns to sport — but not to football
Gamma Waves Partners is a permanent-capital sports investment platform launched on 24 April 2026 by Andrea Agnelli, the former Juventus and ECA chairman, alongside ex-Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini and Benetton family heir Rocco Benetton. Based in Amsterdam, it invests across two streams: minority Sports IP positions — competitions, franchises, athletes, formats — and growth-stage Sports Technology in fan engagement, data, AI content and the connected athlete.
The headline is the omission. The fund's named target sports are basketball, hockey, cricket, tennis, baseball and rugby — and football, the game Agnelli ran for twelve years, is conspicuously and deliberately absent. With the Agnelli family still controlling Juventus and Chiellini already holding a women's-football stake via Mercury13, the exclusion reads as a considered judgment, not an oversight.
Structure, capital, and mandate
How the platform is positioned
The irony is the story. Agnelli spent twelve years as Juventus chairman and led the failed Super League, then left in 2022 amid the club's financial-reporting scandal and a Serie A points deduction — and his new vehicle's first design choice is to skip football entirely. Because the family still controls Juventus, the omission reads as deliberate: conflict avoidance, governance fatigue, or a judgment that European football is over-priced and over-regulated relative to the return on offer elsewhere.
These are football-literate investors choosing to deploy outside the game. Chiellini already holds a stake in the Mercury13 women's-football ownership group, which strengthens the read that the exclusion reflects a view that football is hard to underwrite at a 25% target return, not a lack of access. The platform's pitch — privileged access plus operating expertise at modest capital scale — mirrors, at a smaller size, the network-led model of other boutique sports funds.
At €100m targeted and €55m committed, this is a brand-and-network play, not a capital-scale one. The thesis is that a multi-franchise IP platform can serve as an accelerator and distribution channel for the technology portfolio: IP-led insight selects the tech, and the tech strengthens the IP.
Direction in 2026
Freshly launched, Gamma Waves is building patiently, asset by asset, with a first investment in diligence. The defining strategic question is whether the football exclusion is permanent doctrine or a launch-phase positioning move — the IP mandate's “clubs… including” language technically leaves a door ajar, and a future football position would be a notable reversal.
The harder questions are about capital and credibility: who the LPs are beyond the founding families, how “permanent” €55m of committed capital really is, and whether a 25% gross IRR is achievable from minority non-football IP plus early-stage sports-tech. Agnelli's regulatory and reputational history — the Super League, the Juventus sanctions — is also a live variable in his ability to take board seats across cricket, tennis and US-league franchises.
