Eagle Football

John Textor's leveraged multi-club empire has collapsed — the UK holding company entered administration in March 2026 under a ~$547m Ares debt, and the assets are being broken up: Lyon agreed to Michele Kang (signed, pending DNCG approval), Botafogo to GDA Luma, Crystal Palace exited in 2025.

01 AT A GLANCE

A leveraged empire in creditor break-up

Eagle Football Holdings was John Textor's multi-club group, assembled from 2020 and built around Olympique Lyonnais, Botafogo, RWD Molenbeek and a Crystal Palace stake. By 2026 it had collapsed: the UK holding company (Bidco) entered administration in March 2026 after Ares enforced a floating charge, and the assets are being sold off individually under creditor control.

The structure is now a cautionary tale of leveraged MCO. A shared single treasury moved cash from Botafogo's operations to plug Lyon's deficits; PIK-heavy debt compounded a ~$547m principal toward an estimated $1.2bn; and recoveries are deeply impaired — Lyon, the group's best asset, was sold for just $30m against the secured claim.

03 OPERATING REALITY

How the collapse actually unfolded

The failure was structural, not cyclical. PIK mezzanine debt compounded the principal toward an estimated $1.2bn while a shared treasury cross-subsidised Lyon's losses from Botafogo's cash — the supposed MCO synergy operating in reverse, stranding the weakest creditors. Botafogo's resulting intercompany claim against Lyon is being released in Lyon's favour by the Kang deal, wiping out Botafogo's recovery.

Recoveries are severely impaired: a $30m price for the best asset against a $547m secured claim implies Ares recovers a fraction, with unsecured creditors expected to receive nothing. Textor, removed as a director and contesting the process across UK, US and Brazilian courts, is litigating ownership of Botafogo's shares even as the administration proceeds — adding legal risk to deals that are signed but not yet closed.

04 STRATEGIC POSTURE

Direction in 2026

The group is in wind-down and asset disposal. As of mid-2026 the Lyon sale was conditional on DNCG confirming Ligue 1 status, the Botafogo sale was signed but unclosed amid a competing ownership claim, and RWDM was effectively lost. The episode is the clearest stress-test to date of leveraged, single-treasury multi-club ownership — and a live one, with several outcomes likely to move before any reader sees this profile.
