01 AT A GLANCE

Football's digital simulation, monetised

EA Sports is Electronic Arts' sports label, whose football game — rebranded EA Sports FC after the 2023 split from FIFA — is the company's single biggest franchise, with net bookings up more than 70% over five years against group revenue of roughly $7.46bn. Post-split, EA owns the simulation outright while FIFA licenses its name to rival makers.

EA's football position is unusually two-sided: it pays leagues for rights and sells the game to consumers. It is the Premier League's lead partner (the league has no single title sponsor) and the title sponsor of LaLiga EA Sports. And it is about to go private in a roughly $55bn buyout led by Saudi PIF, Silver Lake and Affinity Partners — the largest leveraged buyout ever, fusing the dominant football game with the sovereign capital reshaping the real sport.

03 OPERATING REALITY

How the business actually functions

EA's football spend is two-directional: it licenses-in by paying leagues and clubs for rights, and sells-in by charging consumers for the game and Ultimate Team — a rare two-sided football position that effectively prints money off the sport's IP. League title and lead deals function as much as marketing channels for the game as revenue for the leagues, the sponsorship and product forming one flywheel.

The PIF acquisition fuses the world's dominant football game with the same Saudi sovereign capital reshaping the real sport, since PIF owns Newcastle and runs the Saudi Pro League — a soft-power and conflict-of-interest story worth tracking. Private-equity ownership also raises the prospect of intensified Ultimate Team monetisation and the gambling-regulation scrutiny that follows.

04 STRATEGIC POSTURE

Direction in 2026

The posture is closing the take-private — expected around mid-2026 — while FC 26 outsells its predecessor, with football the cash engine of the deal's logic. The open questions are whether the buyout closes on schedule given national-security scrutiny, how Saudi/PIF ownership affects EA's neutrality in licensing real competitions and players, and whether private ownership intensifies monetisation in ways that invite regulation.
